Think Climate Youth Forum – (Our talks – inspire actions)
Suggested dates:
22 March – 24 March 2023 (23 March World Meteorological Day or World Climate Day)
Suggested location:
1. Gulf of Aqaba
Why the Gulf of Aqaba?!
Aqaba city has numerous environmental issues as a result of decades of unsustainable production and consumption habits, as well as increased waste generation, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, and soil deterioration.
• Aqaba city is the most affected by climate change and at the same time the hope to save the world’s coral:
Coral in the Red Sea resists climate change. Will the world’s corals be saved?
The coral reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba have the capacity to resist climate change. Therefore, scientists anticipate that it will aid in the preservation of coral reefs that are vanishing worldwide owing to global warming and rising temperatures.
Although coral reefs in other regions can adapt to warmer seas, scientists highlight that no other coral reefs such as the reefs in the Gulf of Aqaba can withstand the excessive water temperatures that may cause coral bleaching. This area is one of the rare places where it has been discovered that coral reefs can survive global warming.
In this regard, academics and environmental organizations hope that the Gulf of Aqaba would serve as a safe haven for the world’s remaining coral reefs in light of the extensive devastation caused by climate change.
• Aqaba city is an attractive destination for forum tourism: Aqaba was ranked among the renowned cities on the banks of the Red Sea, where there are around 4,650 hotel rooms and trained and skilled local staff.
Aqaba is one of the leading Arab cities in the field of smart tourism, where the ancient history of the coastal city has been linked to digital modernity, making Aqaba a promising tourism model due to the natural and human resources available there, in light of the rapid technological development of the world in general.
• His Majesty King Abdullah II’s keen interest in preserving the marine ecosystem in the Gulf of Aqaba, which is threatened by climate change:
Consider the climate crisis. No country can heal our injured earth alone. We need global partnerships that can create real change. And Jordan is part of these efforts. We have been building strong partnerships to manage and sustain vital water resources. And we see more opportunities to work with partners to preserve precious world heritage sites and natural wonders—the unique Dead Sea, the sacred Jordan River, and the resilient coral reefs of the Gulf of Aqaba—which are all threatened by climate change.
